SUMMARY:Building life symposium (Princeton | MoMA)
DESCRIPTION:Building Life: Spatial Politics\, Science and Environmental Epistemes\nThis two-day public symposium examines how entanglements between the interdisciplinary fields of the built environment and the sciences have transformed concepts of nature\, territory\, and the environment over time\, reproducing global inequities that continue to (un)build life. The symposium will feature an array of scholars and practitioners whose work is reshaping our understanding of what it means to inhabit\, study\, and care for a climate-changed world. The symposium is connected to the MoMA exhibition Emerging Ecologies: Architecture and the Rise of Environmentalism (runs through January 2024).\nSpanning the fields of art and architectural history\, environmental studies\, anthropology\, sociology\, race and ethnicity studies\, Indigenous studies\, colonial and postcolonial studies\, and science and technology studies\, among others\, papers will consider how spatial and scientific practices have historically shaped human interpretations and approaches to life. They will also offer speculative projections to imagine alternative possibilities.Convened by Spyros Papapetros (Princeton University) and Esther M. DESCRIPTION:Image credit: HOLOSCENES / Anthropocene Suite\, photo by Lars Jan \n			\n				Synopsis\n			\n	At the Earth Now: Earth 2050 Conference at UCLA\, the Laboratory for Environmental Narrative Strategies (LENS) organized a program of keynote lectures and art exhibitions to kick off the lab’s inaugural year. \nThe LENS program kicked off with a keynote session featuring novelist and urban biodiversity expert Lydia Millet along with environmental photographer and writer Subhankar Banerjee. Next up was a dynamic showcase of UCLA faculty and student projects that reflected the lab’s mission to conduct innovative research on environmental narrative in diverse contexts; to train the next generation of environmental thinkers\, scientists and leaders in multimedia storytelling and strategic communications; and to collaborate with others to enhance real-world environmental communications. LENS also curated a public installation of immersive art projects that addressed timely environmental and ecological topics. These included Marina Zurkow’s hand-drawn\, software-driven animation Mesocosm; Lauren Strohacker and Kendra Sollars’ Animal Land installation; and a video projection about sea-level rise and climate change by artist Lars Jans (whose internationally acclaimed Holoscenes project was first developed during a UCLA residency at the Center for the Art of Performance). \nLENS co-founders: Allison Carruth\, Jon Christensen and Ursula K. SUMMARY:Food Justice Conference
DESCRIPTION:Image courtesy of Barron Bixler \n			\n				program overview\n			\nThe 2011 Food Justice Conference shared research from a wide range of disciplines and connected Oregon food and agriculture communities to national and international groups. The program examined the tensions between food justice and sustainability; addressed regional movements and social networks that have sought to transform the food system; and considered the particular roles of women\, indigenous groups and youth in the history and future of farming. Participants included national policymakers\, nonprofit leaders\, farmers and artists as well as scholars in anthropology\, literary and cultural studies\, law\, ethics\, environmental studies\, plant genetics\, soil sciences\, geography\, sociology\, agriculture\, marine biology\, and visual art. \nParticipants\nThe plenary speakers were activist and writer Dr. Vandana Shiva and organic agriculture leader Fred Kirschenmann. The program also featured a discussion with the founding editor of Gastronomica\, Darra Goldstein\, a dialogue on the field of food studies\, a keynote science panel\, and a roundtable with nationally recognized food and agriculture leaders.
